Bahan pembuat benang operasi
Perbedaan benang operasi yang jadi daging dan tidak ini didasarkan pada bahan pembuatnya, sebagian bisa diserap tubuh dan lainnya tidak.

1. Bahan benang yang bisa diserap (absorbable)
Jenis benang medis ini biasanya digunakan untuk menjahit bagian paling dalam dari sayatan. Meski begitu, benang ini juga bisa dokter gunakan pada permukaan kulit.
Berikut ini merupakan bahan-bahan pembuat benang yang bisa diserap tubuh.
Serat usus (gut)
Benang monofilamen alami ini berasal dari serat dinding usus hewan, seperti sapi, kambing, dan domba. Ini digunakan untuk menjahit jaringan lunak bagian dalam tubuh.
Akan tetapi, benang dari serat usus tidak digunakan untuk operasi kardiovaskular dan sistem saraf. Pasalnya, benang ini bisa memicu reaksi buruk yang lebih besar dan berisiko menyebabkan komplikasi operasi .
Polydioxanone (PDS)
Benang monofilamen sintesis ini bisa digunakan untuk memperbaiki luka jaringan lunak, seperti untuk perut atau jantung bayi dan anak-anak.
Poliglecaprone (Monocryl)
Benang monofilamen sintetis ini digunakan untuk memperbaiki jaringan lunak yang terbuka. Namun, bahan ini tidak boleh digunakan untuk operasi kadiovaskular atau sistem saraf.
Jenis benang ini paling sering digunakan untuk menutup luka kulit agar bekasnya tidak terlihat.
Poliglaktin (Vicryl)
Benang multifilamen ini biasanya digunakan untuk memperbaiki luka robek tangan atau wajah.
Benang ini juga tidak boleh digunakan untuk prosedur penjahitan bagian kardiovaskular atau sistem saraf.
2. Bahan benang yang tidak dapat diserap (non-absorbable)
Semua jenis bahan benang jahit yang tidak dapat diserap biasanya dapat digunakan untuk memperbaiki jaringan lunak, termasuk untuk prosedur kardiovaskular dan sistem saraf.
Chromic Catgut Sutures: Different Sizes, Indication, and Contraindication
Surgical sutures can be plain or chromic. Chromic catgut sutures are absorbable sterile surgical sutures made by twisting together strands of purified connective tissue (mostly collagen), derived from the serosal layer of bovine intestines (sheep and goat). They have twisted multifilament structure with a monofilament appearance.
The sutures are treated with chromic salt solution. The chromic salt is to enhance the absorption and also reduce the adverse reaction.
Chromic catgut sutures are also packaged dry or in a solution of 89% isopropanol, 10% water and 1% triethanolmaine. Mild chromic sutures are specially treated for ophthalmic and cuticular applications. The sterilization of the catgut is achieved with EO (ethylene oxide) and gamma radiation.
The absorption is not as predictable as in synthetic sutures, but tends to absorb faster on infected wounds. The enzymatic dissolution is similar to the digestion of an animal protein by the body.
